Carlstadt Library (2012)
The director of the Carlstadt Library wanted her site to remain on the county servers, and have dynamic update capability. But the county does not allow the use of dynamic scripting on their servers for security concerns.
Web Developers Studio came up with a creative solution: an old, but little-used technique called 'Server-Side Includes". "Snippets" of limited html are uploaded into specific directories which are then drawn into the page. The director can keep the pages fresh, but not worry about messing up the designs. With the addition of a Twitter feed as well as Google calendar events retrieved with a customized API (look Ma, no widget!), the library's site reflects the vibrant community without the cost of a hosted dynamic Content Management System. Updates can be made by the library staff with just a little extra training.
The Director also required pages customized to the demographics of Kids and Teens. We unified two special versions of the site with the tagline "You can go anywhere from here".
For the little kid page, note the attention to details on the theme of "transportation": the red aviator scarf as heading background and the subtly moving clouds. Those and the fun moving artifacts are cool, but not obtrusive.
Teens imagery is more advanced; a globe as seen from space has a Google Local icon focusing on the town of Carlstadt. Other space imagery, including a subtle star field following the mouse around the header, are not in the way, but are subtly distinctive.
The Carlstadt Kids and Teens are indeed going places!
